AboutStoryMode

Video games contain some of the most ambitious storytelling in modern entertainment — sprawling epics, complex characters, and decades of lore — but experiencing that story requires 40-100+ hours of active gameplay. StoryMode addresses a real gap: there's a massive audience of people who care deeply about game narratives but can't commit to the time investment, have already played the game and want to revisit it, or simply consume content better through audio. We built StoryMode to extract, adapt, and produce those narratives as proper audio stories rather than wiki summaries or YouTube cutscene compilations.

The core editorial challenge was figuring out what 'adapting' actually means. A game story isn't a screenplay — it's branching dialogue, environmental storytelling, optional quests, and codex entries scattered across dozens of hours. Our process involved distilling canonical narrative paths into linear, listenable stories that preserve the emotional weight and key plot beats without feeling like a dry plot recap. The writing has to do work that cinematics and player agency normally handle — atmosphere, pacing, character voice — which pushed us toward a more literary adaptation approach rather than a strict summary format.

Technically, StoryMode is built on React and designed as a clean, distraction-free listening experience. The product prioritizes audio delivery above everything else — the UI gets out of the way and lets the content lead. We thought carefully about the listening context: these are long-form stories consumed like podcasts or audiobooks, often on commutes or during other activities, so the playback experience needed to be reliable and persistent in ways a typical web app might not prioritize.

The value proposition sharpens when the source material is something the listener already has feelings about: a game they loved, always meant to play, or watched a partner play from the couch.

The library focuses on titles with strong narrative reputations — games where the story is the reason people played them. This is a deliberate curation choice rather than a volume play. The value proposition sharpens when the source material is something the listener already has feelings about: a game they loved, always meant to play, or watched a partner play from the couch. StoryMode sits at the intersection of gaming culture and the broader audiobook/podcast audience, and that crossover is larger than the games industry has traditionally recognized.
